How-To || October

Final In honor of being productive, and respecting my own time enough to create thoughtful content, I decided not to rush this post. It was originally planned to be posted in September, a month after How-To Journal was posted. But sometimes, to be most productive, we must accept that other facets of our lives take greater precedence. Researching this post has been most intriguing and especially helpful. I hope it helps you as well. There are far too many exams on my schedule and a busy holiday season going forward for us all -- maybe we're feeling the fall slow down, or we're already stressing about the end of the year so much that we are having trouble being in the present. These tips are meant for us all. This will be a mini series, as I release part one, two, and three over the next few days. Enjoy!

HOW-TO || BE PRODUCTIVE || PART I

|| find a space that makes you feel most comfortable ||

Sometimes, when we are uncomfortable, in our sitting position or our surroundings, the work we create can be haphazard and far from our best. We might become frustrated, feeling the need to squirm around, look about, run our hands through our hair, be generally anxious, or unable to focus and unwilling to try. Our sense of unease can manifest its way in many different forms.office

At the root of the problem is often the most simple cure; we can boil down our sense of being uncomfortable to the space we have chosen to work. For me, I need to work being able to see the whole room with my back to the wall or in my own room seated at my desk. This way, I can see the flurry of activity in front of me, and zone it out almost meditatively if in a public space, or I can be honed in on one surface working on my writings and projects.

The best space for you will be one where distractions are minimized, seating is comfortable, and there is optimal surface to spread out or hold work items.

Distractions are not the same for everyone; perhaps being in a space that is loud is more feasible to work in than one that is hear-a-pin-drop quiet. A seat that is comfortable for you may be one that is extra cushiony or one that is as hard as a rock to keep you focused. Optimal surface area might be only enough for your computer or writing pad or sketch book, or it might be large enough to house post-its, pencils and markers, and books upon books upon books. Mine resembles the ladder.

The best space is one that makes you feel your best, so experiment and explore, but make that space just yours to escape to and get those work juices flowing. That way, like Pavlov’s experiment, when you sit down in this space (or stand!) than you are at your most productive.

|| stay hydrated ||

Our bodies are composed of about 70% of water. Water is so important to our functioning; in fact I’ve already planned an entire nutrition post all about water. Without water, our digestion would not be optimal and our brain cells would not operate properly. Imagine, just this liquid could make us work harder, better, and faster. howyouglow.comWater also keeps our body temperature regulated, keeping us warm or cool depending on the outside conditions. This means that you’ll be less likely to be distracted by the draft or the heat, because the core of your body will be functioning optimally and maintaining your body’s homeostasis (equilibrium controlled by physiological processes). If plain water isn’t tasty for you, try adding some lemon or fruit – but try to not add crazy flavoring packets and drops or hydrate on Gatorade, as these are filled with sugars and chemicals that will alter the cell functioning in our bodies not for the better.

Staying hydrated is optimal for brain function and staying comfortable for long periods of time. Woo! Where’s your water bottle? What does it look like?

Two down, five to go! Stay tuned for pt. II coming your way tomorrow...

Remembrance & Pulling Oil

Today, I’d like to take a moment to remember the events that occurred on September 11th, 2001. In horrific tragedy, our nation was brought together, supported, and love was given freely. I often feel like in the worst of times we are united, and it is during the best of times that we must strive to maintain this unity. Say I love you to those closest to you, be present with whom you are speaking, be thankful and grateful and mindful, even when it all seems like waste of time. It will do you just as much good, if not more, to share love and support with others. Take this moment to choose how you wish to connect with those around you, with whom you wish to deepen your connections, and why. It can be as simple as noticing their gorgeous watch or as complex as noticing how much you love when they are angered, their pupils dilate. Be as personal as you can and notice how the world shifts ever so slightly. That shift, repeated everyday, filled with compassion and love and the bolstering of one another, can bring peace and understanding and connection: a united front in every way.

That being said, to love others you must also love yourself --- cliché, but true. I really want to emphasize self care today, so I thought we would learn about the benefits of oil pulling. Maybe you think it’s gross, maybe you think I’m gross for talking about it, but let me tell you that you will not feel gross after practicing oil pulling. Yes, I know this from personal experience, and I was that person that thought it was disgusting and gross and no how no way was I doing that. But here’s why it is worth considering …

OIL PULLING

THE SHORT OF IT ALL||

What is it? The swishing and pulling of a high quality oil-- namely coconut, sesame, or sunflower—around the mouth for incredible benefits and results.

Why would I do this? Self-care brings out the love you have for yourself and allows you to heal from the inside out.

Do you do this? Yep! Every morning, when I shower or do a short meditation, I can be found oil pulling.

BACKGROUND||

The art of oil pulling stems from Ayurverdic healing techniques. The antibacterial properties of the oil (high quality coconut, sesame, or sunflower) pull out bacteria and fungus; alleviate inflammation, congestion, and allergies; rid bad breath, bleeding gums, cavities, gingivitis, plaque, sensitive teeth; moistens mouth, lips, and throat; can relieve stomach issues, i.e. ulcers; improve kidney function; can kill strep throat bacteria. Wow. That’s a lot of positives. Plus, it makes food taste so amazing, and your mouth feels really refreshed and free of general grossness (think about it, it could be real gross in there).

I noticed my teeth that have cavities are now less sensitive, my immunity has improved, and the oil pulling puts me in almost a meditative trance which is always relaxing.

HOW||

Start with 5 minutes every morning and then gradually build to the ideal 20 minutes. It is best done in the morning, but any time for any length is great and fantastic and awesome. I tend to do this coupled with other things like putting pillows back on my bed, washing my face, or taking a shower.

  1. Place 1-2 tsp oil (coconut,sesame, sunflower – of highest quality possible) in your mouth
  2. Swish/ pull the oil around the mouth and between teeth be careful not to swallow because you are drawing toxins and bacteria from all over your body, i.e. the liver, kidneys, spine – and ingesting the oil would draw all of those toxins back into your system
  3. Spit the oil out in the garbage – not the bathroom toilet or sink the oil has a higher viscosity as it fills with bacteria and other toxins and can affect plumbing – and that’s just not something we need to deal with.
  4. Rinse your mouth out with salt water or water with apple cider vinegar to get rid of any oil remaining
  5. Brush teeth immediately after to kill any remaining bacteria
  6. Smile in the mirror and thank yourself for taking care of yourself easy peasy, lemon squeezy

what do you think (comment below) ?? try it for a week and see what happens...

How-To || Journal

HOW-TO || JOURNAL || AUGUST

Welcome to an all-new, monthly series featuring how-to posts. I haven’t quite decided how it will evolve, but that’s the fun in it all. To start, I thought we would talk about journaling.

Journal means a daily record of news and events of a personal nature; a diary -- a definition from the dictionary.

Every morning I write my morning intentions, gratitude, goals, and sources of fun & adventure. Every night I check off what I accomplished, make notes for the next day, detail how I nourished myself, find something I am proud to have accomplished, an experience that did not serve my mind or my body, and a kind, loving comment before bed.

It is easy, doesn’t take more than ten minutes, and provides a moment of introspection before the rush of the day while also preventing the swirl of criticisms, shoulds, and thoughts before bed. Cool stuff.

I used to think my words had to be profound. Now though, I keep it simple and have greater joy. I no longer edit what I think and write anymore; I find it tedious and overwhelming.

Journal to help you heal, grow, and flourish.

What You’ll Need //

  1. Something to write on or in… This can literally be anything. A notebook, sketchbook, stack of notecards, post-its. You can journal on your computer, but I find it less personal and creative—if you have a tablet, you could get the app paper and then handwrite or draw in those pages.
  2. Something to write with… Use pens, pencils, colored-pencils, sharpies, paint, paper and glue.
  3. Pictures, magazines, newspapers, glue, paper, etc. For the days where writing is impossible, find inspiration and put it in your journal—the next time you’re stuck or don’t feel like writing, there will be something for you to look back on .

What to Write About // everything & anything!

  • your life
  • your passions
  • what you are fueled and inspired by
  • your interests
  • secrets
  • love affairs and romances you don’t even have to write!
  • paste pictures
  • doodle

What not to do //

  • critique what you do – it was where you were in that moment in time… honor and respect what has shaped who you have become
  • scribble things out – you were honest… just roll with it
  • rip out pages – you can always just write or paste over them!

Journaling benefits, tips,  & links // there are a million tips but that’s tedious. simple & easy steps below...

  • Try and do it every day -- when you journal everyday you really harness your inner voice and expression… try starting everyday for three weeks and see if you miss it after that
  • Keep it simple – journaling isn’t meant to be overwhelming; it’s supposed to be an act of love and checking in
  • Keep it private -- this helps stop self-judgment and critique because it’s between you and the pages
  • Enjoy yourself! it’s not hard… just write, draw, paste what you like and try not to get caught up in the idea of perfection
